Café Recuerdos – Featuring RI Latino Pioneers

P1030095

We have just completed a traveling art installation that will feature the stories of Latin American immigrants in Rhode Island based on the Latino Oral History Project of RI.

The visual art project focuses on coffee as a memory catalyst. We are using Café Bustelo coffee cans, because the company was founded by Cuban immigrants.

The coffee cans have portraits of Rhode Island’s Latino Pioneers, painted by Cuban Artist, Ana Flores. Many of the portraits of people featured on the cans participated in the Latino oral history project, and most are featured on this website. They have been incorporated into a reproduction of a "peddler's cart" (pictured above) that can also be used as a functional temporary café.
