Senator Jack Reed celebrates Latino History Month with a walking tour of RI Latino historic sites

On Wednesday, October 12, 2016, Senator Jack Reed’s office reached out to Marta V. Martínez, RILA's Executive Director and Community Oral Historian and asked that we take him to some of the sites listed in the Latino History Walking Tour in Providence.


We chose to take him on a tour that corresponds with the first three pins of the existing tour [found on this website] because of their close proximity to each other.

We met the Senator at the Historic Marker that we recently placed on the Parkview and Broad Street bus shelter, and then headed over to the original site of Fefa’s Market, located at 1232 Broad Street, one block from the bus shelter. Senator Reed and Project Director, Marta V. Martínez exchanged stories about the diverse history of Upper South Providence and Broad Street, stories of Rhode Island’s fast-changing immigrant community.

We were joined by staff of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the Rhode Island Historical Society, Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the Providence Preservation Society and the Providence Department of Art, Culture & Tourism.
