The Latino Oral History Project of Rhode Island would like to offer you an opportunity to share an oral memoir—either your own or that of someone you may choose to interview and submit to this project. We are looking for 300-500 word excerpts that capture when, why and how you or your narrator immigrated to the U.S. and then to Rhode Island. Send excerpts, preferably using E-Mail, which will allow us to easily transfer your contributions to this web-site. Click here to send an E-Mail to Marta V. Martínez, Project Director, or write to: P.O. Box 25118, Providence, RI 02905.

When you send your contribution, please be sure to provide background information such as, the name and background of the narrator (you can use pseudonyms, if your narrator requests it); the date of the interview and the name and location of the person who conducted it; and a brief summary of the context of the excerpt(s) you have chosen. Include your name, address and telephone number, plus an e-mail address where you can be contacted if we have any questions. Please note that we will contact you to ask you to fill out a copy of the Release Form for yourself or for each narrator.

The final oral history project will become a part of the Latino Archives of Rhode Island. We would also like to have any digital photos of artifacts such as personal correspondence, immigration papers, photos, business papers, etc. to include in the archives.
Where to Begin: There is no recipe for a story. It can be simple and it can be complicated. For inspiration, click here to download a PDF and take a look at some of the questions to get you started. You might want to write something out on a separate piece of paper. Keep in mind, the preferred word count max is 500 words.

This is a site about telling your own story or sharing a memory, so begin by telling us who you are, where this story takes place or what prompted this memory. What were you doing? Who was with you? Where were you when the story started? How did you feel? What did you think about what was happening to you? How do you feel about it now?

When you’re done: Think about what you just wrote, what you said. Is there anything that needs to be added? Do you need to take anything out? Fine tune your story until you are ready to submit below. Required items have an asterisk *

Photos: While it is not mandatory, we do welcome any digital photos to include with your story. NOTE: Best photos are high resolution 300 dpi .jpg or .pdf format. If you have a story about immigration you may also upload scanned documents, such as a copy of a letter, passport or other papers/photos important to your story. If you prefer, you can E-Mail documents or photos to this address:
